Meal Group FAQ's and Guidelines
How many people can participate in serving a meal?
RMH Limestone: Groups of up to 15 volunteers can prepare and serve a meal. Please do not bring along additional helpers as we will not have “extra” jobs for them.
RMH Riley: Groups of up to 8 volunteers can prepare and serve a meal. Please do not bring along additional helpers as we will not have “extra” jobs for them.
What is the minimum age to serve a meal?
RMH Limestone: Children under 16 will not be permitted in the kitchen. Children between the ages of 8 and 16 may help in the dining area, but must be accompanied by a parent.
RMH Riley: No one under the age of 18 may cook in the kitchen or serve food. Children between the ages of 8 and 18 may help in the dining area, but must be accompanied by a parent.
Can I prepare a meal at home and bring it in?
Because we follow Ronald McDonald House Food Safety Standards, all food must be prepared onsite or prepared in or purchased from a commercial kitchen (store, deli, restaurant). No food preparation may take place in a home kitchen.

How do I sign up?
Click on the yellow box that says “SERVE A MEAL AT RMH LIMESTONE” or “SERVE A MEAL AT RMH RILEY.” If you are with an organization that is serving, please put the organization/company name in as the FIRST NAME. Please put the contact name in as the LAST NAME. Please provide an email and phone contact. You will receive a confirmation email and a reminder email 3 days in advance of your meal date.
What is your cancellation policy?
To cancel or reschedule, please contact us at (317) 267-0605. Since our families are counting on your arrival, and we would need to make alternate arrangements, please let us know as soon as possible if you have a change of plans.
DAY OF EXPERIENCE
Please stay home if there is a chance you might be sick. As many of our children have suppressed immune systems, all volunteers should be healthy and free of any flu-like symptoms, fever or exposure to any infectious disease.
What is the time commitment for each meal?
Please allow enough time for food preparation, serving, eating (if you so choose) and clean-up.
RMH Limestone: BREAKFAST – Serving Time: 8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. * If you need to arrive early to prepare for breakfast, our security guard will let you in and direct you to the kitchen area. Staff will greet you upon their arrival.
DINNER – Serving Time: 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
RMH Riley: BREAKFAST (Saturdays & Sundays only): 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. (Continental breakfast is served M-F) The House is not open until 8:30 a.m. If you need earlier access, please let us know at least 2 days in advance so we can make arrangements.
LUNCH 12:00-1:30 p.m.
DINNER 6:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m.
How many people should we prepare to serve?
RMH Limestone: Breakfast: 30 Dinner: 50
RMH Riley: Breakfast: 30 Lunch: 50 Dinner: 60
House guests are informed of meal times; however, having a seriously ill child does not lend itself to a set schedule so the number of those who participate is difficult to predict. Leftovers from your meal are welcome and encouraged for our families who may have missed the scheduled meal time and may stop by to eat later in the day.
Where do I go/is there parking?
RMH Limestone: We are located 2 blocks west of Riley Hospital on the IUPUI Campus. The address is 435 Limestone Street, Indianapolis, In 46202.
Groups may park in the parking lot located behind our facility on Lansing Street. Since we share the parking lot with our families and have limited parking spaces, we encourage groups to carpool when possible. When you arrive at the Ronald McDonald House, please pull up to our main entrance on Limestone Street to obtain a parking pass from the front desk. You may also unload with our carts at this time. A volunteer or staff member will direct you to the parking lot.
RMH Riley: We are located inside of Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health. Please use the Riley Simon Family Tower to unload your car on the weekends, as the Outpatient Center is not open on weekends. During the week you may use the Riley Outpatient Center to unload your car. You will park in the Riley Outpatient Center Garage or The Wilson Street Garage after you unload your car. Your parking will be validated prior to leaving The Ronald McDonald House. Please do not park in the Simon Family Tower Garage because we cannot validate parking for this garage. If you are planning on serving a meal at Riley, please plan ahead and allow more time to enter through security.
Will we have a chance to eat?
After serving our families, volunteers will be able to sit down and enjoy the wonderful meal they have prepared, if you so choose!
What should I wear?
Please wear closed-toe shoes with rubber soles, and do not wear sandals or high heels. We also ask that long hair be pulled back. We will also provide gloves.
Will our experience include a tour?
RMH Limestone: If you would like to schedule a tour at our Limestone location prior to your meal preparation, please contact Marci Corbin at least a week in advance, as we would like for your group to have the best experience.
Will I be able to interact with the families?
Once all guest families have been through the serving line, meal volunteers are welcome to serve themselves and join our families in the dining area. However, many guests are under a great deal of stress. We appreciate your understanding their need for privacy, if they choose to not participate.
May I take photographs or video when our group is at the House?
Pictures in our common areas or grounds are welcome. Out of respect for their privacy, photos of our guest families are not permitted without their consent.
May we bring a gift for the families?
The time and energy you are putting towards your meal is already a wonderful gift to our families! However, if you choose to bring gifts or giveaways, to protect the health of the children, we are unable to accept previously used items. All items must be new and unopened.
What do we need to provide/what does the House provide?
RMH Limestone: We have four full size ovens with cook tops that you are welcome to use, along with a gas grill for summertime grilling. We have a fully stocked kitchen with serving utensils and pots and pans. You are welcome to use anything you find; however, it is advisable to bring anything specific you may need, just in case. Groups are responsible for providing their own sterno cans for warming, if needed. You may use our grills in the spring and summer; in the winter with advanced notice.
No alcohol is allowed for cooking or consumption. Each meal should consist of an entree with a meat, starch, vegetable, and dessert. Please know your ingredients. Some of our families may have questions or concerns about food allergies or sensitivities. The expense of the meal and drinks are the responsibility of each group as is the meal planning. Our families have access to complimentary coffee, milk and water. Soft drinks are also available for just $0.50. You are welcome to provide iced tea, lemonade or punch if you like.
Groups are required to provide plates, napkins, utensils and storage containers for leftovers. Please consider bringing some biodegradable take-out boxes with your dinner supplies! Our families often take leftovers with them for long days at the hospital.
RMH Riley: We only have one double oven range available (a full size oven and a small half oven). We ask that you set up to serve buffet style. Please plan on serving the families. No alcohol is allowed for cooking or consumption. Each meal should consist of an entree with a meat, starch, vegetable, and dessert. Please know your ingredients. Some of our families may have questions or concerns about food allergies or sensitivities.
The expense of the meal and drinks are the responsibility of each group as is the meal planning. Our families have access to complimentary coffee, milk and water.
