Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be working with children?

The House’s mission is to provide a supportive home-away-from-home for the families of seriously ill or injured children receiving medical care at area hospitals. While the kids are being well cared for at the hospital, we are caring for the parents and other family members who are here to support the child. Although we will have some patients staying at the House, their condition frequently prevents them from interacting with the general public.

What type of volunteer opportunities does the House offer?

We offer volunteer opportunities for individuals as well as groups. You can volunteer one-time or on an on-going basis. You can support us from your home or at our House.

How many volunteers do you need?

The House is staffed by 13 full-time staff, 10 part-time staff, and over 350 volunteers. Volunteers are the heart of our House and volunteer needs are constantly changing as people’s schedules change.

How do I get started volunteering?

After looking over our volunteer information on our website, contact our Volunteer Resources Manager to get additional information about the opportunities that fit your interests and needs.  Then depending upon the opportunity you are seeking, you may be asked to complete and submit a volunteer application. Once you have submitted an application, you will be invited to a new volunteer orientation.

New volunteer orientation sessions are conducted in January, March, May, July, September, and November. All new volunteers are encouraged to attend so they have the information they need to represent the House. New volunteer orientation is required for some positions.

What type of training will I receive?

Our Guest Services Volunteers receive 12 hours of basic training over a six week period.

This training is conducted by both staff and veteran volunteers and mostly done hands on.

Training for other volunteer positions is also done hands on during the volunteer’s normally scheduled shift.

What hours do you need volunteers?

The Ronald McDonald House of Indiana operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  For the most part, volunteers help 9 a.m. to 12 noon, 12 noon to 3 p.m., 3 to 6 p.m., or 6 to 9 p.m.
