To many, a pop tab is just a piece of aluminum with one purpose – to open a can. But to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Indiana, these teeny tiny pop tabs is a valuable resource. Why? Collected pop tabs are recycled, generating much-needed funds to support the House and the nearly 5,000 families we serve each year.
Funds received from the recycling of tabs typically add up to between $30,000 and $50,000 annually. All this money goes to the operating expenses of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Indiana and can cover the cost of operating 3 rooms in the House for an entire year.
Thanks to generous school children, families, businesses, clubs, and churches, over one billion pop tabs have been donated since the program’s inception in 1995, generating more than $700,000 in pop tab revenue for the House.
How Do I Participate?
It’s easy. Sign up at the link below. Then, simply remove the pop tab from the aluminum can and put them in your favorite collection container.
Dropping Off Your Tabs
There are multiple ways you can donate your pop tab collection to the Ronald McDonald House. Please choose whichever is most convenient for you:
- Drop off your pop tabs at the Ronald McDonald House, located at 435 Limestone St. on the IUPUI campus near downtown Indianapolis. Tabs may be dropped off between 9:30 a.m. and 9:00 p.m., seven days a week. If you are dropping off a large quantity of tabs (say, over 100,000) or if you have reached your million tabs goal, please contact us ahead of time. At this time, the Ronald McDonald House cannot pick up the tabs from your group, school or organization.
- Deliver your tabs to a participating local Recycling Partner throughout the State of Indiana. Please see list here. Make sure you tell them they are for the “Ronald McDonald House in Indianapolis.” Also, please be sure to give the name of your group and its complete mailing address, along with a contact name and telephone number.
- Drop off your tabs at your local McDonald’s restaurant. Many McDonald’s accept pop tabs on behalf of RMHCCIN, especially in central and southern Indiana. Please contact your local restaurant to see if they will accept your tabs. (Note: Indiana tabs dropped off at McDonald’s restaurants are shipped to the distribution center in Ohio where they are combined with tabs from Ohio collectors. All of the tabs are combined and the proceeds are split evenly between RMHC of Central Indiana and RMHC of Central Ohio).
If none of the above options work for you, tabs can also be taken to your nearest scrap metal or recycling process center. Once processed you can collect the money they offer and send that (in the form of a check) made out to RMHCCIN Attn: Pop Tab Program, 435 Limestone St., Indianapolis, IN 46202. Remember to include the name of your group (if applicable), complete mailing address, contact name and telephone number.
